Birk, Mia. “Bicycle Transportation: A Win-Win Strategy in the Post-Carbon Era.” The Post Carbon Reader. Ed. Richard Heinberg and Daniel Lerch. California: Watershed Media, 2010. Print. The Post Carbon Reader features essays by provocative thinkers on the key issues shaping our world’s future as it pertains to the environment, including renewable energy and urban agriculture to transportation and community resilience. Mia Birk, the author of the cited chapter, is the CEO of Alta Planning and Design and served as the City of Portland Bicycle Program Manager from 1993-1999. Birk’s chapter focuses on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector in the United States and the national health costs associated with transportation-related air pollution. Birk also addresses the health benefits associated with biking. Birk notes that communities across North America are retrofitting and rebalancing their transportation systems toward bicycling and walking, and she urges that more communities move toward active transportation. Birk’s article addresses the backbone of RIDE FREE, which is why people do bike and why people should bike. The statistics presented by Birk provided beneficial background research in preparing for the filming of RIDE FREE.

Buehler, Ralph, John Pucher, and Mark Seinen. “Bicycling renaissance in North America? An update and re-appraisal of cycling trends and policies.” Transportation Research 45.6 (2011): 451-475. Print. This journal article reviews trends in cycling levels, safety, and policies in Canada and the United States over the past two decades. The article notes that cycling levels have increased in both the U.S. and Canada while cyclist fatalities have fallen. Additional interesting points explored in the article are: cycling concentration in central cities; the growth in cycling in the United States being almost exclusively among men between 25-64 years old with cycling rates remaining steady among women and falling sharply for children; and different innovations and lessons for cities trying to increase cycling. This article is important to RIDE FREE because it allows the exploration of different trends in cycling outside of Georgia and Athens. Further, the main mission of Georgia Bikes and BikeAthens is to create better and safer ways for people to ride bikes. This article helped educate filmmakers so they could take part in these conversations when interviewing representatives from those organizations.

Lindsay, Graeme, Alexandra Macmillan, and Alistair Woodward. “Moving urban trips from cars to bicycles: impact on health and emissions.” Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health 35.1 (2011): 54-60. Print. This article from a health journal estimates the effects on health, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from short trips taken by bicycles rather than automobiles. Through research, the article finds that the health benefits of moving from cars to bikes heavily outweigh the costs of injury from road crashes. Further, the authors suggest that transportation policies that encourage cycling should be implemented in order to help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases and improve public health. This article provides more background information and empirical research on the benefits of biking, which is one of the main messages of the documentary. Learning about these facts will helped the producers shape the documentary and participate in educated conversations with representatives from Georgia Bikes and BikeAthens.
